Questions to Ask Before Choosing a Solar Company

This isn't a sales pitch. It's a checklist of the questions a serious solar company should welcome. If a company can't answer these clearly, that's useful information — whatever their price.

Use these in any solar conversation, including ours.

How long have you been in business?

Longevity matters for warranty service. A company that won't be around in year 10 can't honor a 25-year workmanship promise.

Who installs the system?

W-2 employees or subcontractors? The crew on your roof should be trained and accountable to the company you hired.

Who handles roofing?

If solar needs a roof repair or replacement, who does that work — and is it coordinated or outsourced?

What exact equipment is being installed?

Get panel make/model, inverter make/model, and racking. "Premium" isn't a specification.

Who warranties the equipment?

Manufacturer or installer? Get the names and the written terms.

Who pays labor if something fails?

Parts vs labor coverage are different. Ask specifically what happens to the cost of the service visit.

How was production calculated?

What shading and derate assumptions were used? Two quotes can show very different production from the same-sized system.

What happens if I sell my home?

What's transferable — the system, the warranty, the financing? Get it in writing.

What does the contract actually guarantee?

Read it. Production guarantees, payment schedules, and cancellation terms should all be spelled out.

Who handles service after installation?

And for how long? The install matters; what happens in year 7 matters just as much.

Why these matter

Each question targets a real, common source of regret: paying for labor under a "warranty," finding the installer is gone, or discovering the production estimate was optimistic. None of these are trick questions — they're the basics.
