Is Solar Worth It in New Jersey?
Whether solar is "worth it" in New Jersey depends on a few things specific to your home — not a blanket answer. Here are the variables that actually drive the decision.

No hype here
The factors that matter in NJ
- Electric rates — higher rates make the electricity you avoid buying worth more.
- Roof suitability — direction, shade, age, and available area.
- Usage — your annual kWh consumption sets the target system size.
- Net metering — how your extra production is credited (see Net Metering).
- Incentives — the federal credit and any current NJ program value (see NJ Incentives).
- Ownership structure — owned vs leased changes the math a lot (see Ownership vs Leasing).
- Payback expectations — grounded assumptions, not best-case (see Payback Period).
Where NJ tends to help the case
New Jersey has historically combined relatively high residential electric rates with an active state incentive structure and net metering. That combination — when the system is owned and incentives flow to the owner — has tended to make owned solar economically competitive for suitable NJ roofs. None of that is automatic; it depends on your usage, roof, and current program terms.
Where it can fall apart
- A heavily shaded roof cuts production and lengthens payback.
- A lease or PPA strips out most of the incentive economics — see Ownership vs Leasing.
- Inflated production estimates make a deal look better than it is.
- Poor financing with high dealer fees can quietly erase the savings.
